19 Amazing Holiday Activities in Chicago

‘Tis the season, Chicago! It’s almost December, and the Windy City is loaded with fun things to do to let you take full advantage of the holiday season. Here are a few of our favorites:

  1. There are few better places in Chicago bursting with more holiday spirit than Christkindlmarket (until December 24), now in Daley Plaza and the Park at Wrigley!
  2. Take a stroll down State Street in the Loop to Macy’s, celebrating its 50th year of decorating its Christmas windows (until January 7), and 110th of displaying the Great Tree in the Walnut Room.
  3. Throw on a scarf and pack some mulled wine for ZooLights at Lincoln Park Zoo (December 1-3, 8-23, 26-31; January 1-7).
  4. If you’re out in the burbs, don’t miss the Tree Lights at Morton Arboretum, until January 1.
  5. Channel your inner Buddy the Elf at Caroling at Cloud Gate (Fridays, through December 15).
  6. Through December 22, cheer up your commute by riding the CTA’s Holiday Train!
  7. Be prepared to have Tchaikovsky stuck in your head for days after catching The Nutcracker, presented by the Joffrey Ballet at the Auditorium Theatre (December 1-30).
  8. Take a journey through time with Ebenezer Scrooge and the Ghosts of Christmases Past, Present, & Future at A Christmas Carol, at the Goodman Theatre until December 31.
  9. Or, for more of a contemporary, hip hop, Hamilton-esque take on Dickens’ classic, check out the Q Brothers Christmas Carol at Shakespeare Theater, also through December 31.
  10. Bake up a fresh batch of sweets at the Family Hannukah Cookie Party at The Kids’ Table in Lakeview (December 19-26).
  11. Fun for the whole family, Navy Pier’s indoor Winter Wonderfest (December 1-January 7) features a Blackhawks Ice Skating Rink!
  12. In the market for some seasonally appropriate plaid attire (for yourself or others)? Then head up to Andersonville to the aptly-named Brimfield.
  13. Head down to Hyde Park to celebrate Kwanzaa at the DuSable Museum on December 26-27.
  14. Head over to Logan Square in your most aesthetically unpleasing holiday attire for Park & Field’s Ugly Sweater Party on December 7.
  15. Take care of some Christmas shopping with some recycled art at Remix Chicago’s Third Annual Holiday Remix on December 9.
  16. Laugh your face off at Second City’s Holidazed & Confused Revue: Mandatory Merriment (December 11 & 18).
  17. Drop by the CAA for SAUCED’s Night Market Before Christmas (December 12), featuring over 50 fabulous food, art, and retail vendors.
  18. There’s never a bad time to volunteer, but opportunities especially abound this time of year. Head to one of our favorites, Lakeview Pantry, or any of the myriad amazing organizations in Chicago!
  19. And, if you must…TBOX is December 9. No comment.
