Since today officially marks the first full day of summer (hooray!), you may be wondering how to keep your team motivated through the season, as beaches, vacations, and refreshing beverages dance throughout everyone’s minds. How can people possibly be expected to buckle down and focus on work when there is so much else to do?!
Well, though the dog days can provide distractions, there are ways to be sure your office culture is maintained. Here are a few of our favorites:
Enjoy the weather. Here in Chicago, it’s only warm and beautiful for a few months out of the year. Few people want to be stuck indoors for too long, when sunshine and blue skies are calling. If possible, move your next meeting to a nearby outdoor coffee shop or lunch spot. Or, if it’s a Friday afternoon meeting, for example, try a nearby al fresco bar for a cold drink and a bite to eat.
Implement summer hours. Nothing refreshes your co-workers like letting them out a little early on Friday, free to fully enjoy the weekend. Giving your team extra time to relax will allow them to come back to the office well-rested and ready to work on Monday. Some top Chicago companies that have summer hours are Enova, GoHealth, and bswift.
Schedule events during work hours. Even in (or maybe especially during) summer, people have family responsibilities, like taking care of their children, during the week. While work doesn’t stop during the summer, school does, and that can increase the time parents need to devote to their families. Make sure to account for this when planning company events so as not to exclude anyone. If you’re having a Thursday evening happy hour, think about having it start at 3 or 4 PM.
With these in mind, whatever you’re doing, make sure you’re allowing your team to fully enjoy this fun time of the year. Doing so will allow them to stay engaged and actively involved at work, helping boost your culture.
